This year's SHBT Distinguished Lecture is April 25th 2019, at 4:00 pm, and will be given Prof. Nima Mesgarani from Columbia University! The lecture will take place in Singleton Auditorium (46-3002) at MIT.
Nima Mesgarani's research is focused on exploring the representational and computational characteristics of the human brain areas involved in naturalistic speech communication. He utilizes deep neural networks on both invasive and non-invasive recording modalities to understand the neural processes behind single and multi-talker speech processes. Previous work includes dynamic phoneme encoding in response to continuous speech, neural decoding of attentional selection in multi-speaker environment, and most recently reconstruction of intelligible speech from the human auditory cortex. Modeling such as this has the potential to critically impact research in artificial intelligence, neurolinguistics, systems neuroscience, translational medicine, and brain computer interfaces.
