Make a Gift

The Speech and Hearing Bioscience and Technology (SHBT) Program was created 30 years ago by Dr. Nelson Kiang with the mission of training research leaders for academia and industry in all areas related to the speech and hearing sciences. The program is fundamentally interdisciplinary and is based on the philosophy that progress in this field requires mastering the language and concepts of many scientific disciplines, including engineering, biology, and cognitive science.

SHBT in Numbers:

  • Over 50 faculty from 19 departments at Harvard, MIT, Boston University, and four Harvard-affiliated hospitals participate in this program.
  • Over 150 students have graduated from the program with a PhD degree and taken on leadership positions in academia, industry, medical policy, patent law, and scientific publishing.
